The Secret to Determining Your Health
While many people exercise working their abs, arms and chest, there is one form of strength above all that will determine so much of your health, disease and the rate that you will age:
It’s Your Grip Strength
The following video discusses the importance on your grip strength. Please watch this quick video to see how:
But Why Grip Strength?
Grip strength has been proposed as a bio-marker for:
- Bone density
- Cognitive impairment
- Sleep problems
- Quality of life
Consequently, the routine use of grip strength can be recommended as a stand-alone measurement or as a component of a small battery of measurements for identifying older adults at risk of poor health status. Grip strength is also supported as a predictor of disease with much of the literature focused on cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Grip Strength in Studies
Wu et al. in a summary of 12 studies, determined that a 5kg decrease in grip strength was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Perhaps most telling in regard to the relationship of grip strength and cardiovascular mortality, however, are the findings reported by Leong et al.
They determined that grip strength was a more powerful predictor of cardiovascular mortality 17% more than systolic blood pressure!
Value of grip strength
Findings from Prospective Urban-Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study, a large longitudinal population study done in 17 countries with participants 35-70 years of age. Participants were assessed for grip strength, measured using a Jamar dynamometer. During a median follow-up of 4.0 years.
They assessed all-cause mortality:
- Cardiovascular mortality
- Non-cardiovascular mortality
- Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Asthma, tuberculosis, and pneumonia
- Injury due to fall, and fracture
Findings Between January 2003, and December 2009
A total of 142,861 participants were enrolled in the PURE study: Grip strength was inversely associated with all-cause mortality.
A 5 kg reduction in grip strength led to:
- 17% increase in myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- 16% increase in cardiovascular death
- 9% increase in stoke
Once again, grip strength was a stronger predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure!
