More Bad News for Hotdogs…

More bad news for hot dogs…..

Maybe you caught this last month, Nature.com released research on a “nutritional index” aiming to inform guidelines and help Americans achieve healthier and more environmentally stable diets.

The index ranked foods by minutes gained or lost of healthy life per serving, with processed meats and sugary drinks among the biggest offenders.

No surprise.

Leading the pack of minutes of life lost….Hot Dogs.

Why? Well, a hot dog is made of the remains of the pig after other parts are cut off and sold as bacon, sausage patties, and ham. Common hot dog sausage ingredients include:[28]
•Meat trimmings and fat, e.g. mechanically separated meatpink slimemeat slurry
•Flavorings, such as salt, garlic, and paprika
•Preservatives (cure) – typically sodium erythorbate and sodium nitrite

Since the meat is largely taken from the digestive tract, which is high in bacteria from the influence of the lower bowels, it must be mitigated against Listeria and Salmonella.

In fact, one report has hot dogs contributing to 68% of all annual listeria cases.

Therefore Sodium Nitrate is used to keep people from getting very sick.

However, Sodium Nitrate is not healthy and can form into Nitrosamines.

Nitrosamines are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and should be avoided.
On the flip side, some food has been studied to extend human life…. William W. LI MD, an oncologist in his book: Eat to Beat Diseases thinks that eating Omega-3 fats can increase life expectancy 4.2 Years!

In other words, is a good bet to increase your Omega-3 fats.  However, where the fish oil comes from and how it is processed makes a difference.Since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan in March of 2011, the northern Pacific has seen an increased toxicity level of radioactive material.

Therefore, it is not recommended to use fish from this region.

The purest production of Fish Oil has switched to the Northern Atlantic (Icelandic Coast).

Furthermore, the way in which the oil is extracted makes a difference.

Since fish oil has a low smoke-point (90 degrees) it is necessary to Cold-Process the fish oil to keep the integrity of the Omega-3 properties.

Most fish oil companies heat up the oil to extract it, which is quicker and cheap, however, not only does it ruin the omega-3 fats of the fish oil, it also creates a carcinogenic effect.
